Major Sata drive problems, cant see HD

Hi there, I have a major problem and would appreciate some help.

    Firstly my computer spec:

    Gigabyte 890GPA-UD3H
    AMD Phenom X4 955
    4 gig corsair ram
    ATI 5830
Original windows 7 64 bit, bought through student offer.

I orignally built my system using 2 X Seagate Barracuda 7200 500 gig hard drives. Before I installed windows i set the motherboard as per the book to raid 0 using both drives as a single drive. I had a few issues with the install to those drives but in the end i did get it to work, I cant remember how though. As far as i know it did see the drives.

Then my motherboard gave up the ghost, i didnt want to lose the data on my raid 0 so i got another motherboard (the same model). I thought to be safe i would get an old drive and install windows to that first. I set the motherboard settings the same as before and it installed, i do recall i had to load drivers from the boot disc. The hard drive is an old Maxtor diamond max 10 sata 150 160 gig.

Next i plugged in the 2 500 gig drives in raid 0, luckily the computer saw them an i was able to extract my photos to a nas that i have. Now one of the 500 gig drives has a broken socket on the back and i thought this would be a good opportunity to get rid of it. I decided to keep the other drive. I formatted it through right clicking on the drive in my computer.

The plan was to get rid of the old 160 gig drive as it does make a little noise now and then and use the remaining 500 gig drive as the boot drive, later building up a seperate raid 1 (mirror) in addition to the boot drive.

So i remove the old drive and plug in the single 500 gig drive. The install wont see it, i have tried diffferent ports and cables. I have tried loading all the drivers off the motherboard disc, i even plugged both 500 gig hard drives back in and it briefly saw them but then lost it again. I have tried removing the cmos battery when i went to the gym. I have also tried boot order, and different sata settings in bios.

Now if i take the 500 gig drive out and plug in the 160 boot drive it fires straight up, i can plug the 500 gig in and the computer sees it and is able to use it.

During start up the before installation the computer registers each drive and shows them as being there.

What ever i do the windows install does not see the drives, let alone let me install to them.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

In the BIOS ... advanced > peripheral config > secondary sata controller > enabled?
