Cannot open any file from desktop

I recently uninstalled a small program & something went very wrong. My W7 is totally screwed. When I double- click on any icon on the desktop I get : "Windows cannot access the specified device path or file. You may not have appropriate permissions to access the item." It seems to be a security issue or else the Explorer has lost the mapping info for my C drive.

I also can,t get the virtual disk service running, which means I can't do a repair install because the installer can't see my disks.

Boot into System Recovery Options to System Restore to before you installed the program.

If this fails, from the Recovery Options Command Line, run SFC /SCANNOW : Run in Command Prompt at Boot

I did a system restore to 2 restore points before the problem, and it is still showing up, both times. I can't even do a clean install if I wanted to.
