aghhhhh. my graphics card isn't working. Checked in device manager and I have a warning exclamation. when i investigate under device stutus I have "This device cannot start. (Code 10)". Attempting to update the driver just tells me it's the most up to date version. I can't work out what to do here. Is it worth a new post in the relevenat section or is it something bloody obvious I should already have worked out?
I just noticed that all my drivers can't be installed as my keypad should track up, down left right with double fingers drawn across it.
    cheers

Update your touchpad driver, which may be already cued in optional Windows Updates once you enable hardware auto-updating: Automatically get recommended drivers and updates for your hardware

Try reinstalling your video card driver first. Click on uninstall in Device Manager, then restart the computer to force reinstall. Next click on Update tab on Device, Let Me Choose, then choose another installed driver for the card to see which works. If this fails, go to the Support Downloads webpage for your video card to import and install the latest driver again.

If all this fails, physically reinstall your video card to carefully check all of its connections. Can you defalt to onboard graphics, as is often the case when a card is added?

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling again but no luck. And checked again but AMD's site only has the full catalyst suite, not individual drivers available.. which is a pain. So instead of physically checking the grahics card and possibly invalidating the warranty I just phoned Acer again so they're picking it up again tomorrow.
thank god for having a couple of older spare machines...

I just noticed that I never posted a "final" update. The long and the short of it is that the laptop went back and forward 3 times to Acer in Sweden and at one point someone in Germany posted me a new hard drive with pre installed OS. The laptop runs reasonably well now but despite every effort certain menus relating to the graphics card insist on staying Finnish... so I gave up.
But thanks to this forum I did take a Toshiba R600 declared dead at work, threw in a new hard drive and booted from USB and installed a nice fresh slice of windows 7 professional. I replaced the optical drive with a new one but it still doesn't work. so until I figured that out I was stuck with USB only.
God bless you gentlemen (in a Tiny Tim voice)
