Windows 7: CD/DVD driver missing with Win 7 RC1

03 Jul 2009   #11

Windows 7

Well, after spending hours looking for my old IDE DVD drive, I gave up and tried the Install Windows 7 FAST method. This worked flawlessly, though I wish he would have mentioned that the new 16GB partition was what the new OS would be installed on. I got the impression that the new partition was simply where the setup files were being extracted, not the new OS.

Nonetheless, I was very happy with the instruction, and recommend it to anyone - even those not having troubles with the DVD install.

Replug the DVD drive cables inside the computer and also reseat the CMOS battery. I had the same issue once and it fixed it.

Guy, it is your burn causing the problems. I tried DEEP BURNER and NERO and both failed to make a bootable disc. On the Forums I found that Free IMGBURN set at the slowest burn speed with verify set was successful after 12 failures with crap DVDs. Keep trying is the secret. If after that number, retry the download. Seems the installer is very sensitive and needs an A1 burn.

I very much doubt that it is the download or the burn. I've burned 4 times, using top-quality TY disks, with both Nero and ImgBurn, always with verification. MD5 checksums are ok, and I've downloaded several times. Failure is identical in all cases. The same DVDs install ok on another machine.

Win 7-32, XP Pro-32

I'm really befuddled.

I spent some time playing around trying to get a USB stick to use as my install source (I still haven't succeeded at that). In those tests, I made various BIOS changes and then changed the settings back to their original values. Somehow, the Win 7 64-bit build 7264 disk now gets past the CD/DVD driver stage. (Install still isn't working, but I'm on to a different problem.)

I don't know if I actually changed some BIOS setting, or whether changing something and then changing it back again shook something loose in the BIOS. I did try disabling and then re-enabling the BOOT ROM on the JMicron on-board controller. Also at one point the boot order changed to ATAPI CDROM (which doesn't exist) and I had to switch it back to the Samsung SATA DVD reader. (mobo is Asus P5W DH Deluxe.)

Anyway, I no longer get the CD/DVD device driver error message.

Yet More cd/dvd driver missing (RFM)
Ok so I think I have a new one. I downloaded a copy of Windows 7 and obtained a key through the MSDNA program that my uni subscribes to. This is a completely legitimate operation that (from what I can see) is putting out the release version of window 7 a bit early. When installing I don't get any...
