1GB of RAM is definitely doable for Windows 7, but it won't be useful if you work with a lot of open applications at once. Windows 7 runs much better on 1GB of RAM than Windows Vista ever did, but it is still a very low amount of memory for something you plan to multitask multiple applications at once with - the upgrade advisor isn't lying when it recommends you install Windows 7 on a machine with at least 2GB of RAM.
ok so ill be fine upgrading to windows 7, but i will just have problems multitasking?
If you google "sony vaio vgn-nr160e ram upgrade" you find that model takes up to 4gb of RAM, you can add a gig for around $20 and 2gb for $35.
There are two slots so you should look to see if only one is used, then buy a gig or two stick to add. Double and triple check the RAM specs by reading all the search results and comparing to your computer RAM specs from manufacturer.
Hello john001, welcome to Seven Forums!
There is no upgrade path from 32-bit to 64-bit Windows, it will have to be a clean install and the best way forward, after you have copied out or made back-ups of the data you need to save to external media, is to do a wipe (secure erase) of the entire Hard Disk Drive, have a look at this information below.
All the installed programs/apps will have to be reinstalled so be sure to save the activation keys where applicable and be sure to post back with any further questions you may have and to keep us informed.

After you have made backups of everything you care to save and you want to do a real wipe "clean all" to the Hard Disk Drive (HDD) have a look at this tutorial at the link below, it over-writes everything, all the old Windows code including all the old Windows drivers, giving you the best possible space to install Windows 7 to; it goes hand-in-hand with a clean install.
