Windows 7: network on my laptop

network on my laptop

Hi guys,

hoping to do MS Cert for win 7 and then server 2008. Laptop currently got Home Premium. Practices goes through install for Enterprise. What would be the best way to set it up to do the practices? Some of the lessons require min 2 PC network also. I'm thinking maybe I should setup virtual machines that I can boot up simultaneously even though I haven't worked with virtual machines before, and be able to use them as a network. Ambitious or what?

Anyway, my Qs are:

1) Enterprise or Ultimate? - I guess Ultimate, even though book says Enterprise. But there's no difference really I think. If I was to use eval version and eventually decided to buy and enter the key/code, would there be any price difference/advantage?

2) Should I install it so it dual-boots with my Home Premium? Would this be difficult to do?

3) How difficult to setup/install Virtual Machines? Any recommendations on what I should use to do this? Doing this without incurring costs would be very preferable.

4) Could I use multiple installs of the Enterprise evaluation software to boot seperate VMs?

5) Can server 2008 be installed as a VM? Is there an eval version available?

Any info/advice would be very much appreciated. I've got my work cut out on this one....

Win 7 Ult + Starter, XP Pro +Home, 2kAS, Linux Mint 8, SuperOS

1 - either
2 - It would give you practice in partitioning and dual booting, not too difficult
3 - Once you have 1 above taken care of, you could use Windows Virtual PC. With Windows Home Premium, Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 and 2004 can run in compatibility mode with XP/Vista, And you can download VMPlayer and VirtualBox for all Versions of Win7 (free) - these are both better at hardware integration than MS/WinVPC.
4 - Yes, but with 30 day grace limit before rearming, only 1 activation per machine (real or virtual) allowed.
5 - Yes and Yes - MS even offer a VHD for evaluation of 2008 R2 server.

Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit

fantastic - thanks for that info. I hope to download an eval version fairly soon and get working on the dual boot install/setup. Hopefully the download won't be too painful - 1.5 GB I think.....
