There is no downgrade path for Win7. Vista would use as much or more resources.

XP might run well on it. Do you have retail copy of XP, or did it possibly come with the machine in question so that we could help you reintsall it with that license?

If you upgrade your RAM to 1 or 2 gb you can probably run Win7 fine on it. Do you need to know how to go about this?

Only if you either format the hard drive, or create a new partition if you have the space.

    Your spec's say x64.
x64 with less than 1gb of ram would run slow.

    Can you post your specs.

Bingo, nice catch Ray: 64 bit Win7 would run like molasses on that hardware.

Fredrik, can you find a 32 bit installer for your licensed version to clean reinstall, while upgrading to at least 1-1 gb of RAM. We can help you with the steps for each of these.

    Reinstalling Windows 7

Google your exact make/model + memory upgrade then read the results to find out your exact RAM specs and the prices. Easiest though is to go to the counter at CompUSA to get the exact RAM for a good price - call ahead to check if you want.

Windows 98 won't install on a machine that has more than 1 gig of RAM, I've noticed. A good number of years ago (around 2005 or so), I tried installing Windows 98 on a machine that had around 2 gigs of RAM, and every time I tried to install it, it would freeze and not go anywhere else. I tried installing it multiple times with it freezing in the same place. Also note: Windows 98 does NOT receive anymore updates from Microsoft. Drivers and PC games are no longer created for 98, either. Most games these days require Windows XP or later.

If you're serious about installing 98, make absolutely sure you have less than a gig of RAM, otherwise, it won't work. I've tried this, trust me.

Hardware drivers are also not offered to Windows 98, either! None of the later hardware has 98 Drivers. Even if you managed to install 98 onto a recent machine, NONE of your hardware will have drivers for a 10+ year old OS if your hardware is 2004 or created after that.
You would need less than 1gb.
