    win7 upgrade

    hey there,

would i be able to install win7 x64 on an unactivated (!!!) xp/vista? i found an awesome site (totally legal) which sells cheap student w7's but they sell only upgrades.

    thanks,

    DD

PS: the harddrive i plan on using is empty and i would throw xp or vista on for like 5 minutes (and not activate it) and then immediately upgrade to w7

Its a breach of the EULA to use the upgrade license unless one possesses a valid, qualifying base license such as XP/vista.

Also, before plunging into that buy, make sure its a reputable seller, lots of scams going around.

    hey,

i do have a licence key, but that's for x32 (or is a key valid for every version?) and i plan on clean installing x64 (but not activate, as its in use) and then upgrade to w7.

If you have a valid license (32 bit/ 64 bit), you're legal. And, you dont need to install XP to use the upgrade disk. Just do a clean install with this registry workaround.

Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version

Remember you cant upgrade install from xp to win7 anyway, so clean install is the only way. Backup critical data before starting.

You cant upgrade install from xp because thats how MS designed it, probably because xp and win7 are very different fundamentally or as a marketing tactic. So backup all your data.

But sure, you can run an upgrade install from vista.
