    Windows 7 Reinstall/Restore will affect Linux?


    Hello,
    I've got Windows 7 and Ubuntu Linux on different partitions, so if I were to recover windows 7 by the Advanced Recovery Method restoring to factory condition, would this action delete/affect my precious Ubuntu in any way? Is the restoring applying to that partition or the whole computer? Has anyone done this before?
    I guess I could reinstall Linux afterwards if it will be deleted, but I'd prefer not to (recustomizing one operating system is enough ).

    I'm pretty sure that would overwrite grub and replace it with Windows boot loader. but you can reinstall grub via a live CD, Have a look here. Hope this helps.

    Edit : Also it would be wise to backup your home folder in Ubuntu before trying anything. This would save a lot of time if disaster were to happen.

    Yes I am going to backup the Home Folder for sure.
    As for the replacement of GRUB... I don't mind, but are you saying that Ubuntu itself won't be deleted?

    The restore should only take place on the partition that Windows occupies. I personally have never performed the exact operation you are speaking of, but since Ubuntu is on a separate partition it should be left alone.

    Actually ... it might .. just wipe out Ubuntu.

    Depends on how they programmed the factory restore to work.

    If it just overwrites the Win7 partition(s), you'll be OK.

    But, if it reformats the hard drive (creating new partitions in the process), it could very well wipe out the Ubuntu partition(s) in the process.

    What brand computer is this? different OEM's have slightly different factory restore options.

    That's brave - wouldn't be at all surprised if the restore repartitioned your drive to the exact state as when you got it.

    I'll be restoring sometime this month, so I'll post back my results, whether it deleted Ubuntu or left it untouched.
