    Windows 7 to Windows XP

    Hi all,

I have a problem with downgrading from Windows 7 to Windows XP.

When I installed Windows 7 Ultimate on my laptop a few days ago, I did not really liked the fact that some software did not work because the OS was not recognized. So I want to remove Windows 7 and install Windows XP.

But the problem is, that whenever I am booting with my Genuine Windows XP SP3 CD in, nothing happens. When I open the Windows XP setup manually in GUI Windows 7, I get into the installation menu, the option Windows XP Installation is not visable but not clickable.

I would like to know if there are more people with the same problem I have, and if there is solution to this problem. Thanks in advance.

You won't be able to run an upgrade install of XP from within 7. That is why it is greyed out.

    How do you mean

whenever I am booting with my Genuine Windows XP SP3 CD in, nothing happens
What doesn't happen and at what point?

At other OS, like Vista or XP when the installation disk is in while the pc is booting this text comes up: Press any key to install Windows from CD.
With Windows 7, nothing happens, no text, nothing, just continue with booting.

Settings in BIOS are correct, first boot device is CD player.

You should be able to boot the XP cd.

When your machine starts - you should see white writing on black screen.

There will be something you press to get a boot menu.

Mine says F11 for boot menu ( your F number may be different )

Press F11 ( or whatever yours is )

Arrow down to cdrom drive - put the cd in the drive - press enter.

If you do not then get "press any key to boot from cd", it means nothing bootable has been found.

same thing happens with me..I have windows 7 build 7260. Wanted to Triple boot vista and xp..so I got vista on and installed in its own partition..went to install xp from bootup..and just keeps loading the cd and not going to the installation..I do hit enter when it says "press any key to boot from cd" also..and it just sits there..like its loading the cd..forever.

Nothing wrong with the cd either..checked on numerous pc's.

You already have win in and you want to install vista and xp after it? I think you have to install xp first then vista, then win 7

I dont see any writing on black screen, I can get inside boot menu but can only choose Windows 7. I have tested the CD on multiple computers(windows xp) and it works.

Hi S1f1, welcome to the forums.

You should see on the bottom of the very first screen (POST) mention of one of the following

'Hit F(x) to enter setup, F(x) for boot menu'
'Hit 'DEL' for setup, F(x) for boot menu'

    x = F key to press

After pressing that (boot menu) key you should get a list of available drives to boot from....e.g.
    Code:
    HDD
    CD/DVD drive
    Network drive
    USB Drive

With the CD in the drive, select CD/DVD & it should boot.

There is info Here on how to downgrade Vista to XP so it should work as the kernel version is the same.

    Hope this helps :)
