the problem started when i tried to play Rift on my desktop. works fine on my laptop. i installed on desktop and when it went to update directx it ran into an error so i went to my laptop..copied and pasted the dx9 and dx10 files i was missing onto my external and put them into the system32 and syswow64 files on my desktop. that didnt work, and i still cant run the installer that came with the game..or the web installer on the microsoft website. i've tried making a system repair disk with my laptop, but neither computers will boot it..comes up with an error. i guess i'll have to try using another disk..maybe something went wrong when making it.

I just used the ei.cfg utility to remove the version stuff (key wise) from my slipstreamed Windows 7 x64 Ultimate (SP1) so that if I need to use the image to fix another system, it won't complain about the key being OEM, etc.

Why Microsoft does this is beyond me, you have a valid key on the side of your system, you dang well should be able to reload it without needing a specific ISO image/CD/DVD.

Pathetic

the problem started when i tried to play the game Rift on my desktop. It plays fine on my laptop but when i installed it on my desktop and it ran the directx update it had an internal system error. I copied the dx9 and dx10 files i was missing from my laptop onto my external and placed them into the system32 and sywow64 files on my desktop. that didnt work and i still cant run the installer that came with the game, or the web installer on the microsoft website. i've tried system recovery as far back as i can go but no luck. also i've created a repair disk with my laptop but neither computer will boot it..it gets to the windows screen and an error comes up. maybe i'll try creating another disc..might have had a problem when making it.

It's the manufacturers who are refusing to supply clean-copy Installation DVD's in order to enforce the sponsored factory bloatware which can make up most of their profit margin on consumer rigs - in spite of the fact that MS requires them under their OEM agreement to provide a clean method to reinstall just the OS. They don't want to make it easy.

And MS will not offers installers to anyone other than someone holding a retail key as otherwise they view it as encouraging piracy.

Bryan, try downloading and burning another Repair CD using ImgBurn at 4x speed.

Rocker,

IMO, this is a pretty sad commentary, since 98% of all users will never USE the bloatware that PC
makers supply with their systems (given that there are acceptable open-source and freeware utils
which do the same things, in many cases).

Sigh

You would be surprised.

Oem's make vast amounts from commisiions on the included apps. - lots of people buy them.

The average user is not aware there are alternatives - or where to find them - let alone how to install them.

They just click OK when McAffee tells them their trial is up and they have to pay. Same for MS Office and the other stuff that is on there.

It runs to hundreds of millions of dollars.

thanks for the help with the imgburn. i have a repair disk now but it isnt what i needed. i can get to the same options from the control panel on my desktop. If i was supposed to run off a copy of pre-installed installation files when i got my computer where would it be?

Maybe someone can look at the error log for directx i posted and see the problem? it looks like the Microsoft.DirectX.Direct3DX.dll. file is whats causing the problem.

thanks for all the help
