New build w/Old Components tons of grief

I did a build using mostly used components
    Used: Antec 900 Case
    ASUS Rampage II Genie
    OCZ 1333 RAM 2 Sticks
    i7 CPU
    OCZ SSD 90GB
    XFX HD 5770 GPU
    W7 Pro 64bit OS Disc
    New: DVD Drives
    HDD 500GB Seagate
    Noctua fans

This build would hang at installation. Never getting past Windows 7 screen
Thought everything was bad including the OS Disc so I tried an OS Disc that I knew was working and it got to Format disks before it hung.

I pulled a RAM Stick out of the third slot, and installed another HDD (I had sent it back for a replacement) and then I disconnected the SSD and tried to install the known good OS Disc on the new HDD.
    It worked! Formatted/Partitioned all OK.

Not wanting this OS disc in this build, I then disconnected the HDD, hooked up the SSD and tried to install the first (suspected scratched) OS Disc.
Great again! It loaded and formatted fine.

Now it won't accept the product code. Says invalid product key

W7 won't allow me to wipe the HDD clean because it is being used and has an OS on it.

I can't do a Command Prompt Disk format/partition following the instructions because I don't get the screens that the instructions say appear.

    Ready to shoot somebody.
Really the most unfriendly OS out right now. It's like they want to emulate the Federal Gov't with all the "your not able to help yourself so we we'll make a dozen new safety measures /laws to keep you from hurting yourself" crap!

Links I have tried to help me out are:
    Command Prompt at Startup

    Advanced Boot Options

    Safe Mode

Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version

Unable to format a system drive?

    I need help bad.

Hello Z0nker, welcome to Seven Forums!

That's funny, I don't have any issues getting Windows 7 to do what I want.

After you have copied out or made back-ups of the data you need to save to external media, then boot the Windows 7 installation media to use Step One of this tutorial at the first link below to do a wipe (secure erase) to the entire Hard Disk Drive / Solid State Drive.

Whether you use diskpart to run either the clean all command to completely wipe a HDD / SSD or just the clean command to remove the format configuration data and don't use diskpart to create at least a single partition to do the installation to, letting the Windows installer do the format you will end up with the new Windows 7 System Reserved partition, if you want to make your own decision whether this partition is added, study these two (2) options below.
    • Then if you do not want to create the new Windows 7 "System Reserved" partition use the outline in Step Two #2 to create, format and mark Active a single 100GB partition to do the installation to.
    • If you do want to create the "System Reserved" partition use the outline in Step Two #3 to create, format and mark Active the System Reserved partition and then create and format the 100GB partition to do the installation to.
Either way, running the "clean all" then creating and formatting the partition(s) using diskpart will get you the best possible space to do a clean install of Windows 7 to; you can always extend the Windows partition to include the remaining unallocated space on the HDD / SSD or create additional Primary partitions or an Extended partition after the installation completes if you choose.

I am trying to wipe the HDD clean before I try and figure out why the product code is invalid because I want the HDD for storage, not OS.
Again, the HDD has an OS installed that is already on another working computer.
I will mess with the SSD once the HDD is wiped clean.

So when I type cmd and hit Ctrl+Shift+Enter, the command prompt window appears and I type in diskpart, click Enter and I get a Windows user control pop up asking if I want the program to make changes to the computer. I click yes and then another command prompt window appears over top of the first window showing list disk
It shows disk 0 on line 465 GB blah, blah, blah.
I type in select disk 0 and click Enter, then type clean all and hit Enter and I get

    Virtual Disk Service error:
Clean is not allowed on the disk containing the current boot, system, pagefile, crashdump or hibernation volume.
    Now what?
    Such a friendly OS. . . . .

If you were trying to install Upgrade version to a clean or wiped HD, then you'd get that error until you do one of the workarounds in the tutorial you said you read: Upgrade Install with Windows 7

Easiest is the registry edit. Set a System Restore Point.

The issue with your install failure seems to be unplugging all other HD/SSD's as you should anyway.

    Never said I was upgrading

This build was hanging up at initial install.
Mostly used components had me thinking what was bad?
Power supply, HDD, SSD, Mobo etc. . .
Remembered that the previous mobo owner had fried a memory stick by installing it incorrectly so I pulled one stick out and that seems to have cured the hang/lock up.

Now I want to wipe the HDD clean and install W7 Pro 64bit on the SSD.

Not trying to recover anything. Why would you have me go there?

Then you say, "The issue with your install failure seems to be unplugging all other HD/SSD's as you should anyway."
In one sentence your condemning me for doing the unplug and then say "as you should anyway"
Do you think I can install this HDD in an XP Pro system to format?
    This is insanity.

Theo, I never get to that screen. I'm not installing an operating system.

You cannot wipe clean all a Hard Disk Drive from within the Windows you need to wipe, you must boot the installation DVD, boot the disk and at the screen theog posted press "shift+F10" to get to a command window, the wipe is run from there.

You said that the install to HD proceeded after unplugging the SSD which is why I surmised this was the fix. I then pointed out that this is the recommended procedure when there are more than one HD's. Is it clear now?

Since your install was then successful but errored on activation, I also told you how to activate it now.

If you now want to install to SSD, be sure to unplug all other HD's. You can wait to delete and repartition the HD in Win7 Disk Management if you want. Partition or Volume - Delete

If install fails, I would test the RAM following these steps to isolate problem sticks and/or slots: RAM - Test with Memtest86+

Next I would reset the CMOS: Clear CMOS - 3 Ways to Clear the CMOS - Reset BIOS
