Windows 7: Got XP and windows 7 working together, but XP is not working well

13 Jun 2011   #21

Exactly what happened when you tried installing the two drivers in post #13 which Theog has now confirmed are the likely ones?

Again, sometimes just unzipping the drivers is not enough. You have to go to the target folder and run as Admin the .exe.

Sometimes running the .exe installer is not enough. You must go to the device in Device Manager and choose Update Driver, then Browse to the unzipped folder and try to pick up the driver repeatedly.

I got all the drivers installed and working! Hurrah! Except the ATI 5650 one. The ATI card wasn't designed for XP. No matter. The intel HD one will do fine, I'm not gonna play super duper games on XP, that's what 7 is for
Although, it still only detects 2.3 gb of ram @1.19 ghz processing speed. Why is that?

Is that an Intel card or chip on the mobo? If a card, check in BIOS setup to see how much RAM is apportioned to it. It may have a gig of the 4gb useable.

In power managament, I set it to always on everything (full performance I assume) and it it recognizes my full speed now. It was set to laptop settings, so it was saving power, that's why it was low processing speed. However, RAM is still at 2.3 gb, its not an uncommon problem, I read on other forums that even though its supposed to recognize up to 4 gb, in reality it will only recognize about 2-3 gb of ram. I would be satisfied with 3 gb, but it looks like I'm stuck at 2.30 gb. At least the processing speed is up, that's the one that really counts. Still, anyone have any suggestions how to boost my ram?

OK guys one more question please... I think things would be a lot easier and faster (as my comp in XP is still quite slow) if I could get XP to use AHCI mode instead of IDE... problem is I installed XP in IDE mode. I looked at the links provided in post 2 but I think I want already passed and I don't want to reinstall XP (unless its an easy repair install that won't delete my drivers), and looking elsewhere on the web its all so confusing, I tried one method but I got a BSOD in either mode, so I had to rollback the controlling drivers to the previous version. Here are the drivers in my device manager, I'm not sure which one to update... I tried the intell matrix storage manager app, but it says it doesn't meet the min system requirements. Anyway, in device manager,
IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers
-Intel(R) 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset Family 2 port Serial ATA Storage Controller - 3B2D
-Intel(R) 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset Family 4 port Serial ATA Storage Controller - 3B28
-Primary IDE Channel
-Primary IDE Channel
-Secondary IDE Channel
-Secondary IDE Channel
Other system specs:
Intel Core i5 460M processor
Mobile Intel 5 series chipset
Intel HM55 SATA Controller (found in IDE mode for XP)
Two Hard Drives, C and E, Windows 7 is installed on C, XP is installed as a partition on Hard Drive E (about half of E committed as a partition, with the other half used for general storage)
