I don't believe this is a compatibility issue as OP thinks. I think there are more steps to try to get it installed from boot which haven't been tried yet.

Do you know for sure you're booting the DVD? Do you get the prompt to "Press Any Key..." after BIOS is set to boot DVD drive first? What is the error given then?

Try removing all but 2gb of RAM to try install, Swap your RAM sticks, test your RAM - Test with Memtest86+

Try wiping the HD to get a clean slate. Back up your XP using Macrium Reflect or free Acronis premium imaging app (if you have WD or Seagate HD) so you have a path back.

Try resetting the CMOS: Clear CMOS - 3 Ways to Clear the CMOS - Reset BIOS
While in BIOS setup set SATA controller to AHCI mode.

Unplug all other HD's and peripherals. Try bootable flash stick install as suggested earlier.

Move HD to another computer to install with other HD's unplugged. Before moving back, SysPrep the HD to start on other hardware: SysPrep to move HD to another computer

His 7 install disc is 64 bit.

He will have to install from boot.- or apply with imagex - either way - has to be done from outside.

If Vista bootsector works - he should do it that way.
