Upgrading 7 Home Basic 32 to 7 Home Premium 64

    Hello,
I have sort of a special case here. I purchased my HP laptop in Thailand, and much to my chagrin it came installed with Windows 7 Home Basic. In addition, the HP store which sold me the laptop installed 4gb of RAM neglecting to tell me that the 32bit version of 7 only supported up to 3. At any rate, I am hoping to upgrade to Windows 7 Home Premium, 64 Bit edition.

But while there is a glut of information online about how to upgrade from Starter, there is little to nothing about Home Basic. Do I have to buy a full copy of 7 Home Premium 64 Bit? Can I buy an Anytime Upgrade that is meant for Starter and apply it to my computer?

Windows has so many editions that it's left me quite confused; I just want to purchase the correct product.

    Thanks!

    AA

No need to buy a full copy version, but you will need a Windows 7 Home P x64 dvd to upgrade to x64.

Anytime upgrade can not upgrade 32bit to 64bit

To upgrade 32bit to 64bit you need to clean install.

I would contact the store and tell them you never wanted Basic and want to use all the RAM they provided, ask for an adjustment to 64 bit Home Premium.

They might give you a better deal than having to buy Home Premium retail upgrade yourself, perhaps swap for Premium OEM if you remind them you don't want Basic and wish to give it back.

Be sure to get both disks if possible.

I would surly check on the price of that phone call to Thailand, it might be cheaper just to buy the disc.

Never had to use long distance on any tech support. Use email if they don't have toll-free.

Today Delta changed a flight time on my Europe trip so I was allowed to reschedule the entire trip even though a flyer forum told me they'd never do it in Economy. I knew I had an opening, and asked. It doesn't hurt.

@theog: So I would have to buy a full copy of 7 Home Premium 64 and basically just clean install over my Home Basic?

@All: I contacted the store the day after I bought the computer. They weren't willing to give me any discount on the computer and Thai prices are awful anyways (I paid three hundred dollars more to get the computer in Thailand, long story, I kind of had to. Basically, buying it in Thailand would have been very expensive :P)

Another alternative I'm looking at is just ditching this laptop with all its complications and buying a new one. Then again, there's the question of anyone buying mine =P
