    BSOD on new install (nvlddmkm.sys)

    Hi all =)
I have a situation that has me stumped.

I have two computers (mine and my wife's) which are, for the most part identical.. bought the parts all at the same time, just ordered them x2. The only thing I have changed since building them is my PSU.

    Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 G0 Stepping Kentsfield 2.40GHz
    Crucial Ballistix 4GB(2 x 2GB) PC2 6400
    XFX Geforce 9800 GX2 1024MB
XFX MB-N780-ISH9 NVIDIA nForce 780i SLI
    Seagate Barracuda 500GB SATA

I've installed Windows 7 (7100) on my PC, and everything is golden.

My wife decided she wanted it too (she was previously running Vista).. So I went ahead and installed it on hers.

From within Vista I popped the disk in and began the install process. It appeared to download some updates prior to installing..
It restarted and did its thing.

It "seemed" to install fine.. I got to the desktop and started copying various drivers and programs to the desktop to install. As it was doing that, my wife jumped on and changed the wallpaper.. (I watched and that's all she did) I asked her to double click on the newest video card drivers to install them.
    They appeared to install fine.

A few seconds later the screen began to flicker on and off. Then it locked up and have the BSOD with the nvlddmkm.sys.
It would then restart and before actually loading windows, it would BSOD again with the same file name. Now it's in a loop.

I've tried reinstalling about 3 times. All three times I've booted from the DVD, repartitioned and formatted.
Every time, it will restart at the Finishing Installation step then BSOD with the same file name. I can no longer get it to boot to the desktop.

I'm using the same DVD I used on my PC. Zero scratches on the disk. I've also used an older version of Win7 via DVD and that version seems to have problems too. No BSOD but after installing it will restart and post a black screen with a blinking underscore indefinitely.

How is it possible that with identical systems one has problems and one doesn't?
Any thoughts on how to correct this?

    Thanks!

    Hi and welcome to sevenforums

So on your wif'e it constantly blue screens and you cant log in at all? My first idea is video drivers. Nvidia should have their own thread here. You really have to get the absolutely right driver. Search on nvidia threads here in SF. Second you might want to compare the bios settings in your wife and your computers. I am also assuming you both have the sane build of win 7 installed from the same dvd.

    Let us know

    Thanks for the reply!

How would I install video drivers when I can't actually finish installing and boot into windows? =)

After typing out my first post, I also thought about the BIOS. I'm pretty sure it hadn't been updated at all. So I updated it to the latest version.

After which, I tried installing windows 7 (7100) again.

No BSOD this time, but after installing it gets to Completing Installation.. it restarted successfully once... went back to the Completing Installation screen.. the screen flickered once, then went to a black screen with a flashing underscore.

Its been sitting there for about 10 minutes now.

    Any other thoughts?

    Thanks!

P.S. yes I'm using the same DVD and build on my PC that I'm trying to install on hers.

I'm having that exact same issue, it will get past the first initial install and reboot into the 2nd step and BSOD immediatly....Doesn't matter if it's 1 video card or two..... 8800GTS will not run....

Remove all hardware that you don't need before installing, connect it back after install, eg monitors, usb devices, blue tooth, etc

Try with an ATI gpu, since the error you are having is due to Nvidia drivers, as usual . . .
It can also be a damaged memory module.
    Hope this helps.

If all else fails, try re-seating first the video card, then the processor. Sounds far fetched but has worked for me in times past.

i had a similiar problem. i had to delete the nvlddmkm.sys file during the install of win7. what you have to do is restart the win7 install and press shift f10 after 70% of the 'expaning windows files' has completed. this will bring up cmd prompt. type in del nvlddmkm.sys /s

the /s means it will search subfolders as well. use caution tho. i did this, and now any time i try to install any drivers for my nvidia 7950 gx2, after reboot i get bsod before i can get into windows. i have to boot into safe mode and remove the drivers. so this will help u finish installing win7 but might not fix ur problem.
