Clean Reinstall of Windows7

@ Bare Foot Kid:
Sounds like a good idea to start by cleaning disk with diskpart before W7 install. It should erase any leftover garbage or keep wasted space from the previous instal - right?
From there I'll go with the W7 Custom Install instructions from gregrocker. I'm real rusty on my DOS commands. Started college using a slide rule - I know it shows I'm as old as dirt. Started on PC's running on nothing but DOS. But I'm determined to keep up or become obsolete as an engineer.

BTW I checked out your <HERE> link and I'm already on board! Say a prayer for me when I get back to this task in about a week. I'll let you know how it comes out.

Hello Paul.

Some feel diskpart isn't necessary but it will get you the best possible space to do the install to, just take your time and have fun in the process; <here> I certainly will my friend.

Just do the clean command, the clean all isn't necessary on a new HDD.

Edit: As it seems you want to include the System Reserved partition, after the clean is finished exit diskpart and use the installer to create the 100GB partition and the SysResv will be issued automatically during the installation process.

One tip though, with a 1TB HDD create a 100GB partition to do the install to as Windows 7 can have issues installing to such large partitions as 1TB and larger, you can always extend the Windows partition to include the remaining unallocated space on the Hard Disk Drive or create additional partitions after the installation completes if you choose.

Windows 7 Upgrade didn't install partitioned HD

@ gregrocker & Bare Foot Kid:
Just wanted to thank you both for advice & tutorials. It took three attempts to install Windows 7, but each time I learned something and what you guys said made more sense. Now have a clean custom install with partitions just the way you described, updated drivers, uploaded user files, CCleaned, Pirifom Defragged, and have a clean image on external HD.
I'd have been lost without your help. Still a newbee at this - how do I give you both kudos for others to see?

BTW, Dell still told me I needed to install my old Vista OS first, along with the 90 updates since my purchase. What a waste of time (several hours). I know they want to account for old products out there where hardware isn't compatable with Windows 7. But my W7 purchase lit led me to a MS site where you can run a free program that scans your computer HW and drivers and gives a complete report on compatability, then print it. Hope this is helpful to someone else.

New CPU/Mobo, didn't re-install 7
Hi all, I've got a 1TB hard drive with Windows 7 Ultimate on it. I've been using it in my dual core machine for a while now, but my CPU was showing signs of age, so I got a new motherboard and a quad core CPU (both CPU's are AMD). Just for kicks, I didn't re-install the OS, but rather I slapped...
