Win XP drivers (or Vista) would be best used than Windows Update drivers.

What OS are talking about? (not any Windows I have used)

So you saying, no need to load driver on this MOBO,(NOTE: for this example)
SATA Driver - Load in Windows 7 or Vista Setup

The best place for downloading drivers is from the OEM manufacturer's website.

The blinking underscore bar in the top left of the black screen before the Windows screen comes on is on my 2 PC's.

The 2003 XP of my parents did it and 8yrs. later still does.
My 2005 XP from day one and still does it.

Even this one with Win 7 does it sometimes at least. I'm not sure it did it this morning.

After 8 years I don't even pay attention to it anymore.

I must be missing something if it is a problem.

MS spent nearly a billion dollars under the Win7 WHQL program to pay manufacturers to build drivers so that they could have them first in the installer/SP's and then via optional Windows Updates, and so that manufacturers would not hold out to force us to buy newer hardware as they did in Vista.

I was given a tour of one of these dozen worldwide labs while in Seattle at the MVP convention, and it is most impressive.

Yet some insist on using XP methods of changing out all the drivers issued by the installer and ignoring optional Updates because they are judging by XP and early Vista standards.

In hundreds of installs of Win7 representing thousands of drivers via installer and Updates, I've only had two bad Updates I can remember which were easily rolled back. Of course there are always stray drivers missing after install which need to be imported, but they are growing fewer.

No I didn't use the Windows XP driver I downloaded the latest Windows 7 / Vista 64 driver directly from nVidia.

An important thing to remember is that if you replace OEM drivers with the latest manufacturer's drivers you can encounter problems as OEM drivers may not have the same functionality as drivers direct from the manufacturer.

As gregrocker quite rightly says: "The best place for downloading drivers is from the OEM manufacturer's website."

I agree with seavixen's point that if you are going to import drivers missing in the Device Manager, use the computer manufacturer's Support Downloads website first before going to the Device OEM Downloads page.

Computer manufacturers often customize OEM Device drivers.
