    Windows XP to Windows 7

If I have a Windows XP computer.....can I upgrade it to Windows 7 by just buying the Windows 7 upgrade or how do I do that????

Can I just buy the full version of Windows 7 and load it on my Windows XP......and it will work or no????

You will not be able to do an inplace upgrade if thats what you mean... you will need to do a custom (clean) install... before you do, run the upgrade advisor from Microsoft to make sure that you are able to run windows 7 on your machine... get it -=> here

    Hello Sureword,

Yes, you can buy either a retail upgrade or full version of Windows 7 to install. However, you wil have to do a clean or custom install with it. You will not be able to do a inplace upgrade from XP to Windows 7.

Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version

    Hope this helps,
    Shawn

What do you mean by "clean" or "custom" install??? I've never done this before, so I need clarity. Also, do I just by the Windows 7 upgrade version or will I need to buy the full Windows 7 version? Again, I am currently running Windows XP.

When you do an upgrade in place, that means you load the new os from within your current os and it takes all your installed programs and files with it into your new os. You can not do that with xp. So you must do a clean /custom install. You will have an all new os. Hope this helps. The tutorials on this site will help you understand. Good luck to you with this.

Yes you do qualify to buy and deploy a upgrade version of Windows 7. The requirements are stated as owning a active install of a previous OS and your XP works for that. Even though in the traditional sense you will not be upgrading your XP OS, Microsoft is saying that this is the way they expect XP users to get on-board with Windows 7. Good luck to you with this.
