lost gb on my ssd upon win7 reinstall

You can try to turn hibernate off with this command:

powercfg -hibernate off

No harm done if it does nothing.

So, I can see a lot of files, two of which are the afore mentioned Hiberfil.sys and another is the pagefile.sys -

1. can these safely be deleted?
2. and how then do I keep that hiberfil.sys form recurring?
3. what about the pagefile? what is it and does it need this space for my system to work correctly?

You don't need hiberfile.sys unless you use hibernation. I think it is about equal in size to the amount of RAM you have.

If you use the command I mentioned in prior post, I think it will disappear and you should reclaim that space.

You do need a pagefile.sys, but it certainly doesn't have to be that size.

You can change its size using instructions that pop up when you enter "page file" in the start menu. Best idea is to let Windows control it. It shouldn't be anywhere near 12 GB if you let Windows control it.

I have no idea why those settings may have been smaller on your previous installation and have mysteriously grown on this installation.

Sorry for the newbie questions:

I went to "start" then cmd then entered "powercfg -hibernate off" and it responds that I do not have admn. permission. My sign on states I am admin - so I don't quite get that.

so then, I simply entered the "powercfg -hibernate off" command in the search line on the start button, and the powercnfg icon came up.

I right clicked it and selected "run as administrator". .. It seemed as if nothing happened.. is this usual or did I miss something?

You need to run it from a command prompt:

powercfg -h off

You don't need the full word 'hibernate".

You running it as admin may have worked.

Did your occupied space decline after the command was issued?

Does WinDirStat no longer find the file?

If not, run the command again from an administrator's command prompt and reboot and recheck.

You can turn hibernation back on with:

powercfg -h on

12 MB is too small.

Let Windows manage it.

On the virtual memory page, put a checkmark in the box "automatically manage paging file for all drives".

Choose OK, reboot, and then recheck pagefile.sys size through WinDirStat. It should be found, but with a size considerably smaller than 12 GB.

Then recheck total occupied size again.

Drat - pagefile remains at 12 gb - ideas?

Go back to the virtual memory (paging file) settings.

Uncheck the automatic setting.

Choose "no paging file" radio button.

Apply and OK your way out.

Reboot.

Now you should not have any page file at all. Confirm this with WinDirStat. Confirm your occupied space has fallen.

Then you can go back to the virtual memory page and recreate a page file by re-choosing that automatic setting.

Windows will run without it, but you will occasionally run into problems if you don't have a page file.

If that does not work, I am pretty much out of ideas.

pS- FYI: when I go back into the settings after zeroing out pagefile and reset it to automatic, it goes right back up to 12gb! I guess that is ok as long as I continue to have room for it - but if my programs start taking up space, I may need to bounce this down a bit. Wouldn't you think 1gb would be more than enough? Is it just taking a percent whether I actually need it or not?
