Start > Search crashes Windows Explorer

Please geeks, tell me what to do!

I tried to search something. Clicked Orb, started typing. As soon as I enter the first letter, Explorer crashes. Happens now every time, so search is at the moment useless.

Here`s problem signature:
Problem Event Name: BEX64

To make this issue more bizarr, I noticed that if I type very fast, Explorer wont crash and I can see my search results. Also this every time, I mean typing very fast no crash, typing i.e. one letter crashes every time.

I am not so fast to type, so I really need help.

Kari

EDIT: I just noticed I can still search using search-field in any open Explorer-window, so my indexing should be OK. But like I said, if I try Start Menu > Search, Explorer crashes every time. Weird!

Hi Kari,

This might seem a strange question, but what virusscanner do you have running?

Can you stop that service and test again?

BEX64 error seems to be related to DEP, and virusscanners can have negative effect on it, even MS own.

Good luck

Funny and weird. I stopped MSE and tried, it works. No crash. I start MSE and try, crash. Can not be true that I should make a choice: either use virus protection and not be able to search, or without protection but able to search.

This is really interesting!

As usual my genesis friend is correct abt BEX64 being related to DEP and buffer overflow. there is a description on technet but no solution. Im wondering what event viewer app, and system have abt errors.

IŽll play with this issue tonight, wife is away and whisky stock full. Please guys, do not misunderstand this but honestly I kind of like this type of problems. Nothing is so refreshing to your brain than a real problem and hunting for a solution!

It`s not so big deal now when I know I can do all my searches normally from Exlorer-windows search box. It`s just a bit annoying.

It's like my doctor, when I tell him it hurts when I touch this or that.

Don't touch it he always says.
