Problems with Win 7 Upgrade from XP
background about me - not dumb or luddite but no silver-haired geek either.
Have three pack Win 7 Home premium Upgrade pack. Successfully fought and eventually won an upgrade to a laptop a year ago. Scars have now healed and decided to upgrade main PC. Went to local shop and after some discussion I decided to upgrade chip and insert an SSD. As part of the deal they were supposed to upgrade the OS for me with my upgrade pack. This they did and with my blessing they wiped the old hard disk allowing me to start afresh.
Took machine home and all seemed lovely and rapid, spent a day installing and setting up machine exactly as I wished it. Then up popped the activation box, which surprised me, I gave it the necessary 25 characters but the activation failed as Microsoft claimed it was a clean install. So back to shop, this time clutching the XP disks and told them to fix it.
Got machine back for second time but it seems they have really screwed up. They installed XP on the hard drive (not the SSD) and then updated this with the Win 7 upgrade and it appears that this is now on the Hard drive - so at best I am losing the benefit of the SSD. Further examination reveals I now have two copies of Win 7 on my machine, one on the SSD, not activated and another on the hard drive but successfully activated.
Does anyone have any ideas how I can simply remedy this situation, i.e. have one copy of activated Win 7 on the SSD, without going back to the shop as we are now not speaking to each other.
