Windows 7: Windows 7 Installation, Starts then nothing but mouse & screen

Windows 7 Ultimate - Currently have XP
Windows 7 Installation, Starts then nothing but mouse & screen

Hi all

I'm probably being thick and really would appreciate being pointed in the right direction.

I currently have Windows XP SP3 installed on drive C
Drive D is empty - Used to have Windows XP
Drive E is my data drive.

I put the Windows 7 64 Bit DVD in, it boots up and states loading files, then I see the coloured dots make the Microsoft window, then a blue screen with coloured lines and what looks like leaves. The mouse works, but that's where it all stops. I don't see anything else. Do I need to do anything special at this stage to proceed?

What I want to do.
I want to install Windows Ultimate onto Drive D but keep my Windows XP install as Dual Boot for now. I imagine, the CD would give me options to install like XP used to on drive of my choice, format my D drive and install.

Pentium Dual Core E5300 @ 2.60GHZ
NVIDEA GeForce 8600 GT 512Mb graphics card
Gigabyte G31M-ES2L motherboard

I could not tell you which ones but 1 of my hard drives is SATA and the other two
are the old connection. They are all 80Gig. I think the set up is like this.

Hard Drive 1 SATA - Master, DVD SATA - Slave
Hard Drive 2 Old Connection, Hard Drive 3 - Slave

Really appreciate if someone can help me out on what I am doing wrong.

It would also be better to install Win7 to another HD so it maintains its own boot files and doesn't place them on the XP partition while configuring the Dual Boot. Unplug the XP HD during install if you do this, set Win7 HD first to HD boot in BIOS after DVD drive.. Then after install plug back in XP and use the one-time BIOS Boot menu key to trigger it instead of Win7.

If you can't do this, then unplug all other HD's, boot the Win7 DVD, select Custom install and install to target partition. You needn't format it as it will be done for you.

If you are delayed again wait for awhile as sometimes it will stall here due to rare circumstances. If it won't proceed, then I'd first look at the install media. WHere did you get it? If you burned it yourself, burn another DVD using ImgBurn at 4x speed.

Next try writing ISO to flash stick using Universal USB Installer
with Win7 in dropdown menu, boot under USB, Removable, or HD's.

If both fail then reset the CMOS: Clear CMOS - 3 Ways to Clear the CMOS - Reset BIOS

If this fails try running install from XP to see what happens.
