Switching to Windows 7. Should I touch BIOS.

    Hi, all.
First of all, very helpful forum: found plenty of useful and to-the-point information.

I am using Win 7 for a while (came pre-installed with laptop). Now it's time to have Win 7 (x64) installed on personal desktop as well.

I just a have a specific question related to BIOS. Hope to avoid unnecessary delays/problems this way.

My BIOS is a few years old and I generally follow the golden rule: do not update BIOS unless you have issues. Now that I switch to Win 7, would it be wise to update BIOS as well? If so, then before or after installing Win 7? Thanks.

    My config: P5Q, E8400, 4 Gb RAM, HD4830.

Read the BIOS change logs issued for the board, as posted by your mainboard manufacturer. If one of them says it's for Win7 support then it would give you a heads up as to whether an update might be to your advantage. On the other hand, if there is a BIOS critical issue you're likely to find the Win7 installer won't work properly.

The only machine I possess which needed a BIOS update specifically for Win7 was an Asus EEE Netbook

Thanks for a prompt reply. I found 3-4 new bios versions on asus site. No mention of Windows 7 compatibility afaiks.

Edit: And btw, I'd greatly appreciate if one could tell me if I should bother with Intel(R) Chipset Software Installation Utility V9.1.1.1019 for Windows 32/64bit XP & 32/64bit Vista & 32/64bit Windows 7.(WHQL). I installed after installing XP (years back). Should I bother? Does it do any good?
    Thanks.
