You don't have SP 1 unless you can look in the System area of Control Panel and see it so stated in plain English as you see in post 149 above.

Don't worry about it--just check Windows Update every day or so. If you don't have it in a week or so, then let us know. It's a big download.

Don't worry about programs for now.

    Concentrate on evaluating general performance-----

    does it boot quickly

    does Windows Explorer open quickly

    Does it shut down quickly.

Do all of your devices work as expected--printer, sound, monitor, external drives, modem

Can you go to random web sites quickly

Do you have a malware application installed, such as malwarebytes?

Is your PC generally as snappy as you would have hoped.

Did you copy your data back onto the drive, if you had any backed up?

do you have a backup routine developed?

Configure Windows itself--there are a lot of controls to examine and set to your preference.

Is MSE updating frequently as it should?

    That kind of thing.

Worry about programs in a day or two when you actually want to do something like write a letter to grandma, listen to some mp3s, or edit a video file.

In the meantime, look for stuff that doesn't work right or seems weird.

Perhaps one reason you've had to reinstall again is because you loaded all of the bloatware back in so that it defeated the purpose of doing a "clean reinstall."

The purpose of doing a Clean Reinstall of Factory OEM is to get rid of the corrupting bloatware and useless factory utilities which have much better versions built into Win7.

To keep it as clean as possible, only install the programs that you rely upon, and keep all of them except AV out of the Startup list as explained in Reinstalling Windows 7.

When you notice any problems, missing features, programs malfunctioning, etc. just report back to us and we will help you correct it based on experience helping with thousands of these here.

Are you having problem comprehending some of what we're saying here Dynamite?

Well then we will make sure you have all the help you need. I apologize for any impatience.

You have achieved something very advanced here even though we tend to take it for granted. You are learning a lot and are welcome to stick around and learn as much more as you want. Never hesitate to ask us all the questions you need to understand something which may not be clear. This is pretty advanced stuff.

One reason the PC will slow down is if items sneak into the Startup list. I would regularly check msconfig>Startup to make sure nothing but your AV is checked in there - uncheck all the others. I would also access msconfig>Services, check the box that says "Hide all MS services" and uncheck everything left except AV there, too. Keep checking back that nothing freeloads on your RAM/CPU and Startup there. Startup Programs - Change

There are also a few maintenance steps you can follow to avoid a lot of temporary file buildup: Run CCleaner after you're set up and then monthly. I also use the free Puran Defragger in Boot Mode to keep the disk organized. Other than that, I would not use any tweaking or optimizing programs - especially Registry cleaners - as they will ruin your OS.

HI. at the moment for startup, i have 6 things shown at the startup after msconfig.

What is the AV again? I don't have that shown? I have aim, google update, apple push, itunes and adobe reader and microsoft security client there. Im going to disable all except microsoft security client.

The MS one is MSE. Uncheck the others.

You'll also have to turn off Adobe updater in it's program Preferences on General or Updates tab. Untick the box to check online for Updates. It will still notify you when you open PDF's if it needs updating.
