    Repair Install Questions

With various problems I have suddenly been having with Windows 7, I think a Repair Install will help me out. I have read the instructions posted on this website as a guide. A couple of quick questions before I begin that would really help me out.

    1. Can I use an 'Upgrade' CD to do the Repair Install. It is the one I originally used and did a Clean install by following other instructions from this website.

    2. Does the Registry get effected when using the Repair Install. Should I back it up.

    3. How do I determine if the CD's I have include SP1? There is no indication on the CD itself. The Repair Install instructions have 2 different methods depending on whether SP1 exist or not.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Upgrade and Full installers are the same - it is only the key which determines which version will activate. You will have to reactivate at Computer>Properties afterwards.

You should back up your files but the registry like the rest of the OS is reinstalled so should not be reimported. However settings are reimported during the Repair and this can be a corruption path so the efficacy of a Repair Install is never assured.

If you bought Win7 within the past year you will hopefully have SP1 in the installer. If not it will tell you when it checks compatibility. If you report back the exact licensed version from your COA sticker we can link you to the installer w/SP1 ISO to burn to DVD or Write to flash stick - this is important in case it needs to be used for rescue or repairs.

Just wanted to say thanks for the input. I did Repair Install last night and everything worked as outlined. Cured both of my major problems.

The process took a lot longer than I expected, but I suppose it depends on number of files and programs that it "gathers".

    I appreciate the help
