bump for some more help. I think there is some other trouble shooting steps as the HD still works...I just need to get an OS installed and it only fails at updates.

Also, new discovery. It seems windows 7 has no problem installing the updates unlike vista. It's now completing the installation. If it doesn't have a problem finding those files this time, it should work. I have a feeling if I can get passed the OS install I won't have problem with the hard drive, at least not immediately.
Test your HD to be sure.
You are having quite a harrowing time setting up Windows 7.
If you want a trouble-free set up then the best procedure is to start with clean hard disk. You can divide the disk in as many partitions that you like, with a good partition manager but should leave no unallocated space on the disk. The active primary partition (C:) carrying Windows 7 should be approximately 30 gigs and preferably at the beginning..
After this you would walk through the installation of Windows 7 like a breeze with nary a problem. Please make a restart and see.
