Meaning sometimes you discover a disk is damaged when you write to sectors that hadn't been used before, or for a long time.

Do a chkdsk on the drive. I'm pretty sure it will either find a lot of damaged sectors, or crash all together.

You can't install Win7 on an external drive.
(well at least not without some advanced tricks)

I didn't think you could do it no matter what...when Windows boots it re-initializes USB devices...so it would kill itself everytime...unless you are able to turn off USB reinitialization in the HAL

So many try, so many fail. Have yet to try it with eSATA, which should work after all, it is driven from an internal connection.

I can't believe they persisted after you explained the USB stack...
