Windows 7: will not boot from SSD when attach additional HDDs

14 Feb 2012   #11

Again: It could ask for the DVD because HD is set to boot first in BIOS setup. This triggers the request for DVD since it cannot boot the HD.

You may have a BIOS that requires the Primary HD to be the one which boots, or requires you to set the HD which is to boot first - likely under HD listings if not Boot Order. Enter BIOS setup to check now with all connected.

Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit SP1

Update: tried connecting all HDDs and disconnecting both DVD drives - starts up fine
Then tried all HDDs and connecting 1 DVD drive - starts fine
Then all HDDs and other DVD drive - starts fine
Then all together again - asks for DVD.
Have not changed any ports on the MB, just disconnected each drive from its prior location.

So, with new SSD, 5 SATA devices = boots fine, 6 SATA devices = asks for DVD... Before, 6 SATA, no problem

And the ssd is disk 0 in disk management

Any thoughts now?? Weird

What is the boot order in BIOS setup with all drives attached.

With all drives attached, boot order is still hard drive, SATA cd, floppy. Hard drive boot order is SSD 1st (in port 00), then the 3 HDDs. Still same problem. I even changed it to hard drive, hard drive, hard drive and disabled other device boot and still 'boot failure'.

Disconnect the floppy drive which can cause multiple problems like this.

Sorry for the confusion, I don't have a floppy drive... It's just listed on the boot order

Is there some limiter on how many drives can be attached??

For connection issues, check the version of your firmware and consider updating.

What components make enterprise HDDs more reliable than consumer HDDs?
Been googling around for info and haven't been able to pinpoint exactly what makes a enterprise drive more reliable than consumer drives. I understand consumer demand for bigger drives at lower cost so manufacturers have to cut corners somewhere along the line. What/Where exactly are they...

Cannot boot from HDDs after Power Outage
Two days ago I was very pleased with this forum in helping me resolve a BSOD issue. Unfortunately, that night there was a power outage. I've never had issues with power outages until now. My computer is plugged into a surge protector. I can't boot from either of my HDDs. I go into BIOS and...

Can I change the boot order of my HDDs?
I have two 1TB HDDs and have just realised Win 7 is installed on Disk 1 (the first is Disk 0). I suspect this is why I can't get RollbackRx to install. When I changed the boot order in BIOS the PC wouldn't start giving a NTLDR error. I used the Win Rescue Disk to get it to boot which switched...
