Again: It could ask for the DVD because HD is set to boot first in BIOS setup. This triggers the request for DVD since it cannot boot the HD.

You may have a BIOS that requires the Primary HD to be the one which boots, or requires you to set the HD which is to boot first - likely under HD listings if not Boot Order. Enter BIOS setup to check now with all connected.

Update: tried connecting all HDDs and disconnecting both DVD drives - starts up fine
Then tried all HDDs and connecting 1 DVD drive - starts fine
Then all HDDs and other DVD drive - starts fine
Then all together again - asks for DVD.
Have not changed any ports on the MB, just disconnected each drive from its prior location.

So, with new SSD, 5 SATA devices = boots fine, 6 SATA devices = asks for DVD... Before, 6 SATA, no problem

And the ssd is disk 0 in disk management

    Any thoughts now?? Weird

What is the boot order in BIOS setup with all drives attached.

With all drives attached, boot order is still hard drive, SATA cd, floppy. Hard drive boot order is SSD 1st (in port 00), then the 3 HDDs. Still same problem. I even changed it to hard drive, hard drive, hard drive and disabled other device boot and still 'boot failure'.

Disconnect the floppy drive which can cause multiple problems like this.

Sorry for the confusion, I don't have a floppy drive... It's just listed on the boot order

Update: tried one hdd at a time. It doesn't look like one specific drive, just all thee (4 with Ssd). I plugged in 1, started fine. Plugged in 1 and 2. Started fine. Plugged in 1,2, and 3. Stalled on boot, looking for boot disk in DVD. Plugged in 1 and 3, started fine.

Is there some limiter on how many drives can be attached??
    256 from memory
For connection issues, check the version of your firmware and consider updating.
