    Thanks for the reply mate but i have installed win 7 on a different hardrive as it is partitoned so wont i just be recovering XP?

    thats why I asked. If you F10 (?) is working go for it. if not boot from the xp dvd and do a repair

    Okai mate i dont have the XP cd as i have a HP computer so they dont ship it with the CD.....f10 works but i end up in another screen were it says something about win 7 and then if i click submit it just boots win 7 like normal?

    EDIT: I just noticed you have a HP Pavilion. Restoring to factory settings is F11, not F10.
