Unable to Create Partition / Install to Unallocated Space on HDD

I have just built my first PC, and I am getting ready to install Windows 7 64 bit. When I select "Custom Install", I get an error stating that Windows can't be installed to the HDD. I have one Seagate 500GB drive installed that displays as "Disk 0 Unallocated Space" with 465 GB available. I have also tried to create a partition using DiskPart, but I get an "I/O device error" that won't allow me to create a partition.

I am using an ASRock Z68 Pro3 Gen3 with the HDD set to AHCI. Any ideas?

Has this hard drive ever had anything on it?

    Has it ever been formatted?

Go into Windows Disk Management and do a refresh and rescan from the menu.

Try to format it and assign a drive letter in Disk Management. You will probably have to right click the unallocated space.

Then post a picture of what you see in Disk Management.

I found the solution, I had to switch the DVD drive from AHCI to UEFI. Now the install works fine.
