Installing Windows 7 onto an HP Slate 500 Tablet PC over Ubuntu 10.04

    Hello all!

I recently received an HP Slate 500 from a friend of mine who had installed Ubuntu 10.04 onto it. Being unfamiliar with Ubuntu, I am wanting to install Windows 7 Home Premium onto it. Unfortunately, I have no idea what I'm doing. After researching the forums, I've tried to boot the tablet from a USB Stick, but for whatever reason it's booting straight to the Ubuntu desktop without even noticing the drive. I've made sure that the BIOS is set to boot the USB drive first, but still no dice. Any advice?

    Thanks in advance,

    T.

You have to set the boot device PRIORITY to boot from your usb stick 1st, not the boot disk sequence. That can be left to boot from the hard drive 1st. After the 1st reboot during the install you have to change the boot disk priority back to the hard drive 1st again. If you don`t it will keep booting from the usb over and over. How do you plan to activate 7 ?

here's a link to HPs install instructions

HP Slate 500 Tablet PC - HP Slate 500 Tablet PC - Installing OS Using USB Thumb Drive - c03098566 - HP Business Support Center

and here's part of what that says...

    1. Plug in the USB thumb drive to the USB port at the top of the device (It would not look like it fits all the way in but it does).
    2. Boot the device and hit the "- " hard key at the top of the device to go to the Boot menu.

You may also have to clean the hard drive.

Disk - Clean and Clean All with Diskpart Command

Is Win7 Home Premium the OS which came on the slate?

If so then Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7.

If not the steps are the same for installing retail.

If GRUB was on the HD you need to clean it first following steps in post above.

How exactly do I do that? I'm a little new at this. The tablet has a product key attached to it that matches the OS I plan on using. If that doesn't work I have a copy that I purchased not too long ago, so I'm not concerned about activation.

Does it have a dvd player/burner on it ?

    Never touched one so ......

I use PowerIso to burn the iso file to the stick, but follow Gregs instructions and you should have no problem.
