Unable to. Upgrade windows 7 because of ati issues

    Hi guys

I am having real problems loading security updates for Windows 7. Have been to many sites and Microsft are now telling me to upgrade windows 7 but i am having issues with ATI Catalyst Install Manager and ATI Catalyst Control Centre. The upgrade gets half way through and then rolls back.

It asks me to uninstall these programs but unfortunately they do not appear in my programs and features in the control panel.

It would appear it is ghosting somewhere (my term I dont know what the official term would be lol) and I dont know how to find or remove it.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks
    J

    Two ideas:

    1) Re-install the Catalyst package, and then uninstall it normally.

    2) Driver Sweeper: Phyxion.net - Driver Sweeper

Of course, a clean re-install of Windows would fix your problem.

I would not use Catalyst or any other Display bloatware, just the driver.

It's possible if you had Catalyst that it left services running if you did not turn it off in msconfig>Startup and msconfig>Services before uninstalling. So if it is in fact erroring and not installed, follow Bob's suggestion to reinstall it for the purpose of uninstalling it correctly.

Then if any problems persist please post back the exact problem and any verbatim error messages.

Look over these steps to get a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 which are the same for retail.

Is it safe to use Driver Sweeper?

I think so. I wouldn't have suggested it if I though that it was risky.

If you're concerned, I suggest making a backup of the Windows Registry. I haven't done that in a long time, so I'll let you find that on the Web rather than trying to advise you.

We have seen too often how so-called driver sweepers, cleaners, call them what you will cause more problems than they cure.

Please use Greg's good advice he gave in post #3.
