I hope this doesn't sound like a dumb question ...

The ISO I used for the attempted repair install used the version with SP1. I used this one because SP1 had already been installed on the OS. For the clean install can I use the same ISO, or do I need to download the ISO without SP1 and manually install SP1 as part of the clean install process?

If you have a working DVD install disk or USB stick with SP1, that will work fine for the install. There is no need to manually install SP1 later.

Re partitions: you can make them in diskpart if you want, or you can let Windows make them for you after you exit diskpart and go back to the Windows installation per se. Probably the easiest way is to let Windows do it and just use Diskpart to clean the disk.

    Thanks ignatzatsonic,

It is nice to know that I don't have to download a new ISO. Our sloooow Internet speed requires hours for a download that big.

Yep... Allowing Windows to take care of the task after cleaning with Diskpart is in my game plan.

I performed the clean install, and I have no internet connection. Action Center claims that I do not have the necessary hardware. Prior to the install, I saved Lenovo's wireless driver to both a flash drive and a CD. It was an exe file. I attempted to run the exe from Lenovo unsuccessfully from both media. The error message was "contents of file cannot be unpacked". Do I need to copy the exe file to windows>system32>drivers? ... look for a different driver? ... use a different procedure? drpepper

Rightclick on the file to Extract, then run the Setup file inside as Admin.

If this fails install 7Zip to extract the files and run Setup.

The file may be corrupt so try downloading another. Make sure you have the correct bit-version - 32 or 64.

I went back to Lenovo and downloaded a fresh file. The file had the same name as the first as an exe file. (the first must have been corrupt ... it didn't open a wizard.) This time right click>run as administrator sstarted a wizard which allows me to see available connections. All manner of attempting to connect to my router fails. I receive a window asking me to enter my security key. I have tried: the router password, the routeer 10 digit number, the ISP name, the ISP password, and my home network password. All of these return the same message, "network security key mismatch." I did not encounter this step when I initially set up the Internet connections for all computers here at home or when I set up the home network. I'm lost. Where do I find the security key, or what do I do next?

supplement to previous post -- I cannot figure out why this XP machine will not retain formatting of posts in this fourm. I checked another forum and encountered no formatting problems. ..anyway... Since I cannot make individual lines, I will use numbers for the list I will provide below. By the way, Iknow better than to make changes on my own while someone is helping me. I explored control panel>network and internet>manage wireless networks. I found all the following available and checked for inclusion: 1. client for microsoft networks, 2. Qos packet scheduler, 3. file and printer sharing for microsoft networks, 4. internet protocol version 6 (tcp/ip6), 5. internet protocol version 4 (tcp/ip4), 6. link-layer topology discovery mapper i/o driver, 7. link-layer topology discovery responder. There is an install button for these. does this inidcate that the above are not installed and need to be installed?

Go to another WIn7 computer on your home network, enter Network and Sharing Center, then click on Managed Wireless Networks. Click on the home network, rightclick on the picture of the device, select Properties, then the Security Tab. Tick the box to show Characters to see your Security Key. Type it in correctly to connect to the Network.

I'll try that. The daughter-in-law borrowed the other Win 7 machine. I'll borrow it back this weekend.
