Aaaaaaaaaargh! When I began to install a program I realised I had accidentally downloaded the 32 bit version!
I have reinstalled the 64 bit version, this time installing my lan driver. I'm accessing the internet without a problem but I can't access Windows Update. I get a 8024402F error. I have tried the Windows Fix but it didn't work.
Should I initiate a thread in the Network and Sharing section?

What AV are you running? Suggest you replace any bloated AV with Microsoft Security Essentials with the Win7 Firewall.

Have you tried restarting Win7 a few times? Sometimes these are temporary connection problems.

Set Windows Update to Automatic and let it ride for a few days to see if it resolves.

Thanks, no AV yet, just in the process of installing Microsoft Security Essentials.
Have done a couple of restarts.
    Will follow up that link.
    Thanks.

I contacted MS support, and of the 3 methods I was given, using specific Global DNS settings did it for me. I'm ready to start installing programs.
    Thanks again for the help.
