How to fix error 0x80070490 so windows 7 sp1 will install

Have tried for several days to install SP1 on Windows 7 Ultimate. Ran/installed System update readiness tool, ran the CSC log, ran the windows update troubleshooter and still no luck. Last update received was at 8:42 pm (PST) for KB978821. Please help if you can.

Hello scell, and welcome to Sevenforums!

Try this fix-it: You receive a "0x80070490" error code when you use Windows Update or Microsoft Update Web sites to install updates

If it fails, follow all the instructions on that same web page I linked you to.

Failing all of this, use this method as sugested by this Microsoft link:
    Microsoft said:
Run System File Checker. From the command line run the command sfc /scannow.
If it is still a no-go, go back to the second link and see if there is more things that Microsoft suggests you to try.

Another thing many are too well familar with when having problems seeing SP1 go on fully is the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7. Note that comes in two flavors for the 32bit and another for the 64bit Windows.

For the 64bit you would grab that from Download: System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB947821) [May 2012] - Microsoft Download Center - Download Details

Download and run the SP1 Standalone installer. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2505743

If all else suggested fails use the latest installer with SP1 to Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7
as you likely have corruption problems best remedied by a perfect reinstall. Everything is in the blue link.

Is this being seen on an OEM system or custom build of your own? If you downloaded SP1 stand alone already be sure it wasn't the one for IT developers! The link gregrocker posted there has a link of the page for the version you want.

The IT developer download will always stall on the home pc! Many grabbed the wrong one for XP's SP3 as well as the two service packs for Vista and ran into the same problems not being able to get a particular SP to go on.
