Activating Windows 7 in October

I currently have the 64-bit version of the Windows 7 RC installed on my desktop. I am very happy with my current build and hope to keep it.

Does anyone know if there is a way to just activate my copy (legally, i don't mind paying) or something similarly simple to maintain my current build while making it a full install.

Any input would be very useful.

Windows 7 x64 finally!

Hi Phishinjimi
MS states you can't: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/get/faq.aspx
You will have to do the Windows Easy Transfer procedure, which will transfer your files and program settings. Then reinstall all your programs.
It is highly recommended that anyway you do this, backup your files first.

Hello phishingjimi, and welcome to Windows Seven Fourms!

As noted here at Windows Seven Forums, the retail build is expected to contain some fixes and refinements since the RC was released. So expect some improvements when you get the chance to install it.

On the positive side, because you have the RC activated, you can purchase the "Upgrade" version for the flavor of your choice, (example Home Premium = $120) instead of a "Full" version (example Home Premium = $200) and save a little cash!

Those who did not install the RC and choose to upgrade from a current XP or Vista installation must retire the OS they are upgrading.

Happy surfing!
