Install 64Bit on clean Partition loads 32 bit?

    Hi,
I just dual booted the new Win7 Ultimate from Disk on my existing 32 Bit XP system.

I formatted a new partition and after installation, the is reporting a 32 bit installation of Win7.
I was wanting it installed as a 64 bit OS, but did not see anywhere to make that choice in customize.

Is it possible to do this?
Should I have formatted a different way than NTFS, or by a different formatter to get the partition set up as a 64 bit partition?
Did I miss something in customize?

BTW the 32 bit was a painless installation and is bootiful !! However I want the advantage of more ram for my graphic apps.

    TIA
    Go gentle with me...

Gently speaking, you need a 64-bit install ISO or DVD.

    Welcome to the sevenforums! waifer

One question right off to ask here is how are you determining the 7 installation is 32bit and not 64bit? If the iso image you burned to disk was the 64bit you will see two separate "Program Files" and "Program Files(x86)" at the root of C. That separated the default 64bit Windows from the 32bit programs you install by having two separate folders.

I have the launch install disk (ahead of the general public) and it has indicated that both versions are on the disk. I have Win7 ultimate and is either 32 or 64 bit.....
So apparently I do have the option.
Any help is greatly appreciated still
    Thx

The fast way to verify which you have on there is to look at the root of C to see if you have one or two "Program Files" directories as I mentioned before. If one of those sees the (x86) at the end you know the 64bit is on. For only one Program Files that would be the 32bit version.

With the option to choose between the 32bit or 64bit right there in the installer you would simply opt for the 64bit 7. Aooarently you simply clicked on the installer the first time without noticing the 32bit option was default or simply selected.

That usually means the packaging comes with both discs, which should be clearly labelled as to which platform is on that disc.

Hmmm, since you have the option then why not just install the 64bit version this time.

Seeing as how you have the choice and this special CD that nobody else seems to have you might as well use it to your advantage.

If you installed from your 32bit XP system you cannot have installed the 64bit version of Win7, the setup program will simply not run.
In case you confirm you have installed the 64bit version somehow, make sure you are booting to the right one. They will both show as "Windows 7" in the boot menu.
