Windows 7: Raptor to SSD

Raptor to SSD

I ordered a Patriot Torqz SSD. I currently dual boot between Win 7 Pro (1st drive) and Win 7 Ultimate (2nd drive), each a separate 74GB Raptor drive.

I use Acronis True Image for back ups and was thinking of swapping the SSD for 1 of the Raptors and restoring the proper drive image to it.

I'm not sure if it matter which drive I replace. I'm not sure if I can do what I have outlined here.

I am sure someone here is sure, and will tell me.

TIA

Hello 24c,

Since you are just replacing one drive with another one, you should be able to restore the system image of the replaced drive onto the new SSD without a problem.

FWIW - I did install the drive and the back up image and all worked OK.

I wasn't happy with the performance, so I took the advice of someone on the Patriot forum - formatted, clean install, and ran HDTune - much better results.

Putting an old image on a new HD is like giving wife 2 the same diamond you gave wife 1. It may get the job done, but you'll live to regret it.

Oh, so very true.

Have you also upgraded the firmware and installed TRIM for the Patriot Torqx SSD drive? That should also help improve it's performance quite a bit. Upgrading the firmware will format the drive though, so be sure to back up again.

I have the latest firmware, I checked. I have not installed TRIM yet.

I ordered the drive from Newegg yesterday at 9:29AM - had in installed today by 1PM. Then formatted and did the clean/right way install, up and running by 4PM - still pretty new to me.

I got the 64 GB drive, which was sold out by today. I wasn't the only one who took your advice

Right after ordering the drive I went to the Patriot site, looked around, joined the forum, and between here and there I am off to a good start with the SSD.

As of right now, I don't regret the purchase 1 bit. I expect it will be a great learning opportunity for me and better prepare me for choices when I build a new machine.

Thanks again for your recommendation and help.

You're welcome 24c. I'm happy to hear that it's running well and fast for you, and that you are happy with it. TRIM will help the drive last longer and improve performance.

Yes, by all means install TRIM.
