    Trying to upgrade 7057 to 7600 - Errors re: x64 vs. x86

1st Post - nice forum y'all have here!

I've been running 7057 since it became available and have been loving it. A few weeks back something happened to my install of 7057 and I lost a lot of setup info & preferences - I've gone back to various older restore points with no change, the OS defaults to freshly installed preferences on many things (won't pin any programs to the Start menu or Task Bar, hides Sys tray icons, contextual menus such as New> are all empty, etc.)

Anyhow - the point is, I'd like to try upgrading to 7600, but I'm short on disc space so I don't have the luxury of just doing a clean install. I've gotten my hands on a few different copies of 7600, and its no problem to change the cversion config file, etc. to allow the upgrade. Upgrade appears as if its going to work fine, but when I get to the 'Checking Compatibility' box it stalls & then generates the following error:

The following issues are preventing Windows from upgrading. Cancel the upgrade, complete each task, and then restart the upgrade to continue.

    • You can’t upgrade 64-bit Windows to a 32-bit version of Windows. To upgrade, obtain a 64-bit version of the installation disc, or go online to see how to install Windows 7 and keep your files and settings.
    • 32-bit Windows cannot be upgraded to a 64-bit version of Windows. To upgrade, obtain a 32-bit version of the Windows installation disc.

Upgrading Windows will affect the following devices and/or programs:

    • These programs might not work properly after the upgrade. We recommend uninstalling these programs before upgrading. Cancel the upgrade, open Control Panel, and search for "uninstall a program". (Note: Programs marked as * can be safely reinstalled after the upgrade.)

      • ATI Catalyst Control Center *
      • SCSI Pass Through Direct

Anyone else seen/solved this? Any ideas/suggestions?

edit - I should note, I'm quite sure the version of 7057 I'm running is x64, and the discs I'm using to upgrade are x64 as well. . .

    Welcome to the forums drasp.
Check the version you are running in the control panel. If it is x64, make sure the 7600 is too. There is a lot of strange things out there. Only Microsoft supplied iso's are really safe to run

Thanks - good info. Both 7600 .isos I've tried gave the option to select the x64 installs & were packaged as x64 .isos. . .

If disc space is preventing you from doing a clean install, then you need to solve that problem first. That tells me your data isn't backed up, so if it is important enough to avoid a clean install, then it should be important enough to back up. Get yourself a cheap external drive, backup your data, and then go about your OS install the best way, which is a clean install to a blank drive.
