I have already joined that forum. I was the original poster in that thread. I'll ask the guy who replied if his problem was intermittent.

Are there jumper pins on that drive? The WD webpage for that model number contains a link for jumpering but the model numbers referenced on the page that's linked don't match. Pics I've found of very similar model numbers show jumper pins.

Yes, the drive has jumper pins.

According to the man who replied to my question on the other forum, his problem was exactly like mine, where there can be several successful reboots, and then one where the "select boot device" error occurs. He even fixed the problem with startup repair, and it worked for a while, but it started exhibiting the same error again after a while. He recommends I get a Seagate drive to see if the problem goes away.

Was the drive the original one installed by HP? Have you checked HP's website for your model for updated drivers? I don't see anything there (other than original drivers) for any specific model of hard drive that they may have installed. Intel's "Matrix Storage Manager" listed there is the one that originally shipped with the machine. Not sure if it'll help, but there are a couple of other updates that may have an affect (including a newer BIOS).

As far as the HDD's jumpers are concerned, I misread WD's webpage yesterday; the page did apply to your HDD's model number -- the model numbers referenced simply applied to drives that deviate from the text for the diagrams. If you've already updated the machine with system updates from HP it may be worthwhile spending the time experimenting with them if you really want to try to avoid spending the cash on another drive.

The guy's response in the HP forum thread appears very helpful. Seems as though his experience really does match yours. Recommend repping (kudoing) him if you haven't already. He spent some valuable time trying to help.

The original hard drive in the computer was a Seagate. I gave it to a friend of mine, so I can find out the exact model number if I go over to my friend's place. I was actually thinking of giving him this Western Digital Drive and taking back my original one.

I was at the HP website a few days ago and I updated the BIOS.

Just wondering if it was a part of the original equipment. If there's a recognized issue with an OEM part they'll typically offer a software/driver update. Including updates for HDDs (didn't see any when I visited).

    Any change?

The Seagate was a part of the original equipment, and it has always worked well. It's the Western Digital I bought to replace it that I am getting the error message with. That's why I am thinking of switching drives with my friend, so I can get back the Seagate. There was no change by updating the BIOS.

Is the WD drive still under warranty? If so and you contact their Tech Support it may be a known issue with them.

    Let us know what happens.
