Installation problems : Windows 7 64-bit on Dell Optiplex 760

I bought recently a re-furbished Dell Optiplex 760. I installed an SSD for the boot drive and tried to install Windows 7 Pro 64-bit (the OEM CD). The install ran smoothly up to a certain point and then did nothing. I repeated the installation with the 32-bit version and this completed successfully. The point at which the 64-bit install failed appears to be when the installation process tests the video performance, suggesting a problem with the 64-bit versions's graphics-card driver. The successful install revealed the graphics card (on-board chip, in fact) to be the Intel Q45/Q43 Express chipset. Has anyone had a similar experience and dealt successfully with the problem ?

See here: How to Access Device Manager During the Installation of Windows 7

The part to follow is down a ways under Now for Safe Mode:.

Disable your video card/chip for now then download and install the latest driver once it completes if Windows Update does not resolve theproblem.

I see that Win7 X64 is officially supported on the OptiPlex 760:

Drivers and Downloads | Dell [United States]

I'm not sure what you problem is. When you say "OEM CD", do you refer to one that came from Dell?

Gentlemen, Thanks for your suggestions. The process of deactivating the video driver during the installation worked a treat; I was able to complete the installation and install subsequently the correct video driver. The OEM CD (actually DVD) was the disc provided by the refurbisher - it's an MS version for re-furbishers, who are pretty active in this part of the world.
