OS will not boot since motherboard replaced

Motherboard died in a custom arcade machine, Replaced motherboard but of course it will not boot. Anyway i can get the serial key for windows "out" of the hard drive? This is a custom machine with no sticker. Also, if by doing a fresh install, will I lose any data on hard drive? Does it format when fresh install? All help is greatly appreciated!

If the old (defective) motherboard did not corrupt the hard drive, and most likely it did not, and the replacement board is identical I would suspect either an installation problem (wiring error) with the new board or a hardware problem with the new board.

Is the new/replacement board a complete board (with memory and CPU) or was there components from the old board used on the new one. That can be a sticky issue, trying to resolve where the problem is.

That pretty much seals the deal, that the motherboard you tried is likely bad, too.

I worked on some coin operated machines years ago, before PC's. I worked for a juke box company that had a few pinball machines out (to protect the jukebox account).

If the drive is Sata, check the bios on the replacement motherboard and see if the IDE mode is set to IDE or ahci.
If its ahci, then change it to IDE and see if it boots.
