    Windows 7 OEM installation

I have a home assembled pc that I would like to upgrade to Win 7 from XP. I have found a OEM copy (new) that says it will install on a "refurbished" machine. Can I install that on my pc?

    Thanks

Found ? Do you mean purchased ?

Of course it should work. Do you have another hard drive to install it on , so as not to ruin your xp install ?

    Depends.

If it's a System Builder type, it would work. (You aren't supposed to use a Windows 7 System Builder copy on a PC that isn't for resale. If you did, you'd be breaking the license agreement, along with many other people. There's no enforcement of the resale requirement, as far as I know.) If it's an OEM copy from a manufacturer, it may not.

Feeling lucky? I imagine that the price is low, but that you can't return it if it doesn't install.

You should let us take a look at a link to the OEM copy you're considering if possible. Otherwise what exactly does it say on the package?

Of course I would be purchasing it! Not concerned if I used it on the original hard drive, I still have my full retail version of XP.

Here are OEM versions that will work for certain. Watch out, the Windows7 versions are intermixed with Windows8 versions.

    Newegg.com - windows7 oem

    That's wrong, then isn't it.

Win8 only comes as oem - that is the same as full retail now.

Surprised they are the same price. Win7 is so much better than win8, it is a bargain.

I would agree with you - but I am certain that there will be many people who will argue that. I myself have no plans for Windows8 - maybe one day when there is a decent affordable Win8 tablet.
