I was running Windows XP 64-bit and purchased the Windows 7 Ultimate upgrade from the Microsoft Store and downloaded it. I did the custome installation but it automatically installed a 32-bit OS, instead of a 64-bit. How to I install the 64-bit version of Windows 7?

I haven't purchased it from the MS store, but I would think there would have been a choice of x86 or x64 to download. You may have to contact them to find out how to get the x64 version.

According to the literature, x32 and x64 versions are both included in the download and CD copies.
My store bought package has both 32 and 64 bit, but the DVD's are literally stuck together with the 32 on top. If I had not noticed the thickness, i would not have seen the second DVD. The second one was 64 bit.
On that subject, I was HIGHLY annoyed that the upgrade would not work because it claimed I had vista home premium installed. I have Vista Pro, but there was no opportunity to prove my case, like putting the Vista Pro into the tray for verfication.
The Win 7 had two options: new install or cancel. Of course, since it did not upgrade, I have about two weekends of installing software again. Thank you, MS.
If both 32 and 64 bit versions would have been downloaded, you would have had a very large file. As was mentioned, you probably picked the wrong one to download.
robertpri, there is no Vista Pro version, do you mean Win 7 Pro? If so, that is not a valid upgrade path from Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Pro, so you will have to use the custom install option.
I downloaded upgrade copies of the Win7 Home Premium upgrade version from the Microsoft Store. There were separate downloads for X86 (32 bit) and X64. I got one of each, in the .iso form. The 32 bit iso was approx. 2.44GB in size, and the 64 bit, about 3.15GB.
Maybe things are radically different for the Ultimate version, but I doubt that.
You are correct--my error, but the MS Win 7 site and the package both clearly indicate the Win7 upgrade would upgrade Vista Home Premium. And it does, but you have to make a custom install. To me, an upgrade means it can install on top of the previous system with no changes to settings, etc.=pparks1;332950
There is no Pro version of Windows Vista.
--Home Premium
--Business
--Enterprise
--Ultimate
Those are your common flavors when it comes to Vista.
Perhaps naive, but that's the way it's been.
A custom install of course means reinstalling everything. Of course, I have nothing else to do for the next week anyway.
For clarity:
What version of Vista do you have? Which version of Windows 7 are you trying to upgrade to?
You are supposed to be able to upgrade-in-place Home Premium to Win7 Home Premium or Ultimate. (I have personally done neither.)
If you are changing from 32 bit to 64, a custom install is required.
Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Pro, both 64 bit.

It NEVER says anywhere that a custom install is required.
Anyway, I'm finished, other than more hours of installing software. Oh well, it's one way to install just what I need.
