I get stuck on a "missing driver for CD drive" when installing WIN 7

I could salvage the files on my Asus Eec PC thanks to incredible efforts of Cactussoft on this forum a few weeks ago. Now I decided to follow his advice and do a clean install using Digital River´s WIN 7 ISO (WIN 7 Pro swedish x86 - my Asus has NO inst. disc) ,downloaded the ISO file, removed the "ei.cfg" file, burned the image to a disc and tried to install it on my Eee PC. Since it has no own DVD drive, I use an external DVD (LG GP08NU20) USB drive. The installations starts, but after I set up the language and keyboard and get the interface asking me to click INSTALL and I click that, nothing happens for a while and then I get the message that necessary driver for the LG DVD drive is missing. I must install the driver before the inst. can proceed further.
Strange, I thought this driver was on the WIN7 ISO disc - when I plug in my DVD drive into my stationery PC running WIN 7 (although x64) the DVD drive is installed automatically and works fine.Anyway, I am then asked to install the driver, either from a USB stick or another CD disc. I downloaded the LG driver on my stationary PC, unzipped it, put it on a USB stick , insertedit into my Asus USB port and clicked USB as source of the driver files, but to no avail, I get the message than the driver cannot be found, no matter what I do. I´m probably doing something wrong. Any ideas how to remedy this stumbling block?

This is one of the many inherent problems with regards to upgrading the OS on those type of Netbooks. They come with just the bare minimum hardware/software including the so called starter OS to function properly with any other OS other than what's installed. They are designed that way and are not meant to be upraded. This is to say that it can't be done. Many owners of those netbooks have upgraded the OS successfully. Personally I don't see the point in buying something that is that inadequate from the start and then turn around and spend more money on a upgrade OS and RAM when that time and money could have been saved and best spent by getting a mid level laptop from the start. It's just my opinion.

As for your problem, first backup any data you want to keep. Then my best advice would be to restore the notebook to factory condition by using the built in hidden partiton/software. How to Restore the EeePC to its Factory Settings « EeePC Tips
Then you can try using the ISO 7 pro you have and see if it will take.

bassfisher6522 - thanks for your well meant advice. Unfortunately I cannot restore my Asus Eee PC to factory condition. The touchpad stopped working (a very common ailment of the Asus Eee PC I found out) , I had it repaired, but the hidden partition got damaged in the repair process, so no restoring to factory cond. possible, that´s why I want to do a clean install. A friend of mine called and suggested I try to boot froma bootable USB with WIN7, so I´ll try out that and see if it works.

Further to my previous post: I have just tried to boot the WIN7 from a USB stick, but my Asus won´t boot from a USB stick, ONLY from an external DVD drive, (or an internal HDD if a working system is installed). Well, I realize now I bought myself a piece of junk, (it actually was a favor to a friend who moved overseas and could not use it due to different voltage) but I´m now stuck with it.

Problem solved, found the solution on the WEB, it is necessary to use a software Windows 7 USB DVD to burn the ISO file to a DVD disc. I did jut that and now, after long last, the installation is working.

You can contact Asus directly an order the system recovery CD for a nominal price. I've ordered several from HP, Dell and the most I spent was $19.95....it may be a little more. At least this way you'll have the OS (only the OS) as a physical media to reinstall as and when needed.

I have just done that, the problem is that Ausus´european service center often takes long time to deliver the discs (I see on the web that they do not have the best reputation for speedy service and sometimes they have to be reminded, even twice, to ship) so in the meantime I have to use the downloaded WIN7, I have just installed it and it works o. k. , of course I´ll install the original factory OS with working hidden recovery partition as soon as the discs are here.
