    Unmountable Boot Volume Error On Clean Install


    The laptop was running slow and I decided it was time to clean things up and get her running like new again. Backed up everything and wiped the drive using KillDisk.
    Three and a half hours later when the process was done I popped in my Wndows 7 OEM disc only to be greeted with the dreaded Unmountable Boot Volume on that pretty blue screen . Tried several times but it's the same thing each time.
    What did I screw up? Appreciate any help. Thank you!

    Check the hard drive with the manufacturer's diagnostic tools.

    Tried that, but Western Digital's diagnostic software doesn't support Windows 7, as hard as that is to believe.

    Western Digital's diagnostic is a live bootable CD no need for any OS.

    theog, I tried gettting this to work, as per WD, but I wasn't able to:
    WD Support / Downloads / Mobile & AV-25 / WD Black
    I'm sure it's me since I am not tech savvy. Do I download this to a CD and then boot the laptop?

    Yes you need to use another machine to download WD HDD software and burn to disk, try this link for disk image .iso, think you were trying to download windows version not bootable version

    Insert disk in laptop and boot the machine from the disc, this can be done in bios to permanently change boot order or press F8 on startup to select disc

    Once you have the .iso file, rightclick on it to Burn/Open with Windows DIsk Image Burner, unplug all other HD's and peripherals, boot disk to run Extended scan. Then if it checks out, do a Quick Wipe from same disk.

    Boot into BIOS setup to enable Legacy BIOS if present. Next check BIOS Boot order for an EFI Boot Disk and if present remove it, set DVD drive first to boot, HD second. Then set SATA controller to AHCI. Save changes and Exit.

    Then boot into installer DVD or flash stick burned or written using tool and latest ISO for your licensed OS version here.

    At first installer screen Press Shift + F10 to open a Command Box, type:

    DISKPART
    LIST DISK
    SELECT DISK 0 (after confirming Windows 7 target HD #)
    CLEAN
    CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY SIZE=102400 (for 100gb partition, adjust as desired)
    FORMAT FS=NTFS LABEL="WINDOWS 7"
    ACTIVE
    EXIT
    EXIT

    Next click Install Now to Clean Install Windows 7 to the partition you created. If it fails then report back at which step and the verbatim error message.

    In addition read over these steps to understand the tools and methods which work best to get and maintain a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7. The steps are the same for retail.
