    XP to W7

Hi guys, my friend is trying to install w7,he is running xp pro right now. We no there is no upgrading from xp so we tried a custom install and it installed for about an hour and then it rolled back to xp saying it couldnt install. So we tried to upgrade to Vista from xp first so that maybe it would make it easier to install w7 but it did the same thing. Is there maybe something with the xp os that is preventing it from installing anything , like maybe an update or something? Thanks

What are the specs of the machine that you are trying to install to? Did Windows provide any error messages or other information when it failed to install and then rolled back?

Are the xp, the vista, and the win 7 all legit copies with serial numbers?

    Great thanks Dino

so you still have XP on it. when you try to boot from vista to install it what happens? does it boot from the dvd and start expanding files, a vouple of re-boots, etc? Where does it die?

    thanks

It dies 3/4 of the way through, just before finalizing the install

I was worried about vista OEM over XP student. OK you may have a problem. there is an upgrade path from XP PRO to win 7, but not from xp student. make sure and check the chart here. Deciphering Windows 7 Upgrades: The Official Chart | Walt Mossberg | Mossblog | AllThingsD

what version of win 7 do you have?
