The only other option I can think of is installing to a virtual drive. I think that would use emulated hardware so it wouldn't be very good for gaming.

That is quite interesting, man! Not that enthusiast about eight but, hey, if it offers the possibility...
Just a few things I didn't fully understand:
Is it exactly like standard Windows 8, or is it some portable edition optimized for flash supports in any way?
Can it be installed even on an SD read by an USB-attached internal card reader?
As for the virtual drive, yes, that is not something that I want to do. ...
The official Windows 8 To Go is optimized to run from a flash drive and be used on more than one PC. It will detect hardware and update drivers every time you connect it to a different PC. The official version is Windows 8 Enterprise and activates based on that companies license to use it.
The unofficial roll your own version may have issues, legal and or otherwise. If you use it on the PC you created it on it should activate OK. Use it on another PC and it may not. Use it on to many different PC's and you may find your product code black listed. To Microsoft it will look like you are trying to install the one copy of Windows on multiple PC's. It's meant for Enterprise customers that have a license to use it. That being said if you want to play around with it on that one PC it shouldn't be a problem. I posted the link for doing it in Windows 8 because that's all I could find. You may be able to do the same thing with Windows 7, they are very similar. Looking again at what you are trying to do, that may not be what you want. You'll likely have to alter your backup image to boot from it and that may not be a good thing to do.
